Boswellia
serrata Boswellia
(Boswelya, Salai Guggul) is an Ayurvedic herb that
contains anti-inflammatory triterpenoids called
boswellic acid. Boswellic acid and its derivatives
have anti-carcinogenic, anti-tumor, and anti-hyperlipidemic
activities. Boswellic acids are effective anti-inflammatory
and anti-arthritic agents, for osteo
arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, soft tissue
rheumatism, and low back pain. 1. Anti-inflammatory Boswellic
acids have inflammatory action by inhibit the leukotriene
biosynthesis in neutrophilic granulocytes by
a non-redox, noncompetitive inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase. 2.
Asthma: Due to its anti
inflammatory activity it can be used for asthma
also. 3. Anti cancer Boswellic
acids inhibit proliferation and induce apoptosis
in Hep G2 cells via a caspase-8 dependent pathway.
Hence, it can useful for the treatment of some types
of cancers. 4. Analgesic It
is found to exhibit marked sedative and analgesic
effects in animal models. 5. Anti arthritic
activity Boswellia extract
has arthritic activity. It is known that non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs can cause a disruption
of glycosaminoglycan synthesis, which can accelerate
the articular damage in arthritic conditions.
A recent in vivo study examined Boswellia
extract and ketoprofen for their effects on glycosaminoglycan
metabolism. Boswellia significantly reduced the
degradation of glycosaminoglycans compared to controls,
whereas ketoprofen caused a reduction in total tissue
glycosaminoglycan content.
Animal studies
performed in India showed ingestion of a defatted
alcoholic extract of Boswellia decreased polymorphonuclear
leukocyte infiltration and migration, decreased
primary antibody synthesis, and caused almost total
inhibition of the classical complement pathway.
